The Watch
As John stood unable to move from the overwhelming evil in front of him, he was too horrified to even think about running. It was Halloween night, and it was John and his friend’s favorite day of the year. It was the one day where they could do whatever they wanted and break free from the cages that they felt they were in all year. John was tall with short jet black hair and green eyes. The group was universally known around the town as fantastic athletes, but John, who was a great basketball player, was the most recognized of them all. Causing chaos, his group would dress up as monsters. They would steal candy, scare kids, egg houses, attack people and even steal money from unsuspecting parents. However, this Halloween was different from all the rest. John’s friends decided that this year they would do something big. After all, this was their last year together before they went off to college. Although John’s gang was focused on causing terror and chaos during Halloween, their teachers and parents unanimously knew them as good kids. But during Halloween they were thugs and punks and John, the leader of the group, was the worst of them all. They decided this Halloween they would rob old Dr. Grimm, who was known around the town for being rich and always out of town. Despite his great deal of money, he lived in John’s small town in a very small house. Dr. Grimm was famous for having a gold watch that was said to be older than a hundred years and worth tens of thousands of dollars. Becoming restless, the group waited impatiently for darkness, as if it would never truly come. They had made their plan and went over it again and again. As the group broke into the house, it was John’s job to stand watch, and hand out candy to passing kids, as if he were taking care of the house while Dr. Grimm was away. When night finally arrived, they began sneaking towards the house, as to not alert anyone of their immoral intentions. Following directions, John positioned himself on the porch, and stood watch as his friends, who would be stealing the watch, broke in through the back door. If they were fast, they would have been able to find the watch in 20 minutes, 30 at maximum. However, it was approaching the fortieth minute and John was beginning to get worried. After five more minutes of waiting, John, who was now concerned, headed towards the back door. Before he left the porch, he noticed a dark figure walking past the house. Once the figure went under a light, John saw that it was a man dressed in a clown costume with a sick, gruesome face. Seeing that John was staring, the clown smiled with yellow teeth that were sharpened to a point and gave a slow wave that made John run through the back door. He had never seen the inside of Dr. Grimm’s home before, and he wasn’t very surprised by the old, tired look of it. It was very timeworn with chipping wood and tarnished paint, but John immediately felt sick because of the evil atmosphere that seemed to be hiding in the shadows. There was a dark, indescribable feeling of helplessness that the old house had. John, whose heart was now beating fast, reluctantly walked towards the stairs no longer thinking about the watch and only of finding his friends and leaving. Walking ever so slowly, John got to the top of the stairs and heard the sound of a knife and then a couple of seconds later a loud thud from something hitting the ground. John quietly moved towards the open door from which he heard the noise. When he saw what was inside, his heart stopped and he was unable to move for what seemed like an eternity. Inside were the bodies of his friends along with the clown who was now holding a bloody knife. Having now seen John, it gave the most menacing, wicked laugh that sent chills down John’s spine. While the blood soaked clown moved towards him, he was unable to move. He could only watch as the clown approached him with the same sick, twisted laugh and evil smile.
